  • Introduction


    • Welcome to the Preliminary Online Course for R-FETPV First Module. This section contains information about how the course will be organized.

      Congratulation to all trainees who have been selected to join the R-FETPV First Module entitled “Basic Epidemiology and Surveillance Data Analysis” . This Preliminary Online Course is the prerequisite of the R-FETPV First Module. 

      The main objectives of the Preliminary Online Course are to provide you with the background knowledge on basic concepts of epidemiology and surveillance before joining the in-person training of the R-FETPV First Module.

      The course consists of two parts, compulsory study materials with nine topics and supplementary study materials with sixteen topics. The training materials include self-learning video clip with downloadable presentation. Participants must finish all compulsory topics by 31 May. We recommend all trainees to learn from these valuable materials. Please read the course structure carefully.

      We are looking forward to working with you through this online platform and to see you in person during the R-FETPV First Module in Thailand.

    • What is required to complete the course?

      You are required to complete all nine compulsory topics by 31 May.

      Please note that only participants who successfully complete all nine compulsory topics are eligible to join the in-person R-FETPV First Module in Thailand.

      Following are the two components of this course:

      1. Compulsory topics

      Basic Epidemiology
      • apply basic epidemiology and essential definitions, and
      • concept of causation, basic measures and tools of descriptive epidemiology.

      Survey and surveillance
      • surveillance concept and procedure.

      Outbreak investigation
      • goals and foundation of a disease outbreak investigation for animal disease, and
      • basic descriptive and analytic statistics for disease outbreak event.

      Biostatistics in epidemiology
      • descriptive statistics in epidemiology;
      • inferential statistics in epidemiology and
      • bias, confounding and interaction.

      Fundamental skills
      • computer skills and data management using Excel.


      2. Supplementary topics 


      Survey and surveillance
      • animal Health Surveillance and application at global level;
      • sampling design and sample size calculation for surveillance;
      • surveillance data analysis and bias, and
      • diagnostic tests.

      Outbreak investigation
      • outbreak Investigation, and
      • study design and sample size calculation for outbreak investigation.

      Biostatistics in epidemiology
      • descriptive Statistics;
      • inferential Statistics;
      • sampling techniques and sample size estimation, and
      • bias in Epidemiology Confounding.


      Fundamental skills
      • scientific writing tips, and
      • scientific presentation.


      Epidemiological thinking and animal health policy
      • epidemiology in animal health: Field vs Academic and epidemiology for disease control;
      • principles of animal disease control;
      • translating evidence into practice, and
      • public Health Risk Assessment.
